“I Saw the Light”: Johnny Cash singing (lip-synching?) for an episode of Columbo. (RIP, Peter Falk!) The crazed-looking redhead in the background with the other singers is Ida Lupino, playing Cash’s shrewish wife. He kills her, of course, and so Columbo has to figure it all out.

I don’t know why this episode has imprinted itself on my memory. I never liked Columbo that much, but, as the youngest person in our household, I was lowest on the TV pecking order and always ended up watching the show because my sister and mom liked it. Perhaps it was in this episode I had my first realization that people can successfully pretend to be good while being actively, covertly bad?

It was definitely in this episode that I had my first realization that I'd have nightmares about those creepy, Stepford, fembot background singers (and not just Ida Lupino)!

Ha, yeah, those background singers are really creepy, the effect heightened by all the frantic editing!

Hold up...Johnny Cash and Ida Lupino were in a Columbo episode together? Now, there's an odd little gem of celebrity stunt casting.

We never watched Columbo. I remember Peter Falk most from his role as one of the cab drivers in It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, because I've seen it about ten times.

I know I've seen that movie, but I don't remember a thing about it. I always get it mixed up with the Around the World in 80 Days and those other 60s big-budget excuses for a cast of thousands to get paid & get drunk. Falk was in a couple Cassavetes movies too...I remember him in those, and The In-Laws, of course.

Columbo was such fun to watch growing up. I just love Ida Lupino and her over-the-red-headed-top acting.

Ida Lupino also directed movies too--one of the first women in Hollywood to direct. She never got enough credit/recognition for what she accomplished.

Awwww everyone wants to shake fake (well, real, but you know what I mean) Johnny Cash's hand!!! Ida looks a treat!

I think I got a lot of my life lessons from Columbo too. I think he's responsible in no small part to my aversion to ironing!

Now I see you running around the globe in a trenchcoat, solving murders. Are there any crime novels with Indigenous detectives?
