me and mother's day
Mother's Day is kind of a mixed bag for me, because my mother is no longer among the living. Over time I've learned to deal, but I must admit that by the time the actual day rolls around I'm so sick of seeing adverts for Mother's Day sales, gifts, sappy tributes, photos, etc. that I feel a profound sense of compassion fatigue and this afternoon when I went into the local pet store and the kid behind the counter chirpily wished me a happy mother's day, I wondered how he would have reacted had I screamed, "MY MOTHER'S BEEN DEAD FOR OVER TWENTY YEARS NOW, OKAY? AND I CAN'T HELP BUT THINK ABOUT WHAT A ROTTEN BRAT I WAS WHEN SHE WAS ALIVE! SO I'M NOT SURE I'M GONNA BE HAPPY TODAY UNLESS I HAVE A GLASS OF WINE OR A LOT OF COOKIES."
But he's a nice kid (which means his mama probably raised him right), so I didn't do that.
Anyway, if you have a mum, be nice to her today! (Unless she is a Joan Crawford type.)
