Night kneels over the sleeper.
Where did his journey begin,
where will
It burn through to?
And what does he swim for now.
Swim, sleeper, swim.
Your peace as an evangelist to me.
Your transformations unknown.
I study your sleeping form
at the bottom of the pool
like a house I could return to.
Like a head to be cradled in the arms.
Unless you are asleep I cannot
make my way
across the night.

I know you like Sappho, so I will make a rec. to you [eh, you’ve probably already read it:)] Carson wrote “Eros the Bittersweet.” It has been awhile since I read it but it made a lasting impact on me- it was so insightful, and I think you would appreciate her hypothesis. She explores desire as it is described by Sappho --a paradox: love/hate, absence/presence… and she centralizes her argument on the Greek definition of “eros.” After I read the “Eros" essay- I started looking into her poetry and was thrilled to find ancient mythological sensibility running through all of it (e.g. the personification of night etc...)
oh, now ima just babblespammin' your post... (sorry) Cool qotd, Holy!

I love that line. I look at sleep so often as a deep swim through the oceans in my mind. I often remember my dreams. Last night there was something about those pink lids on Yoplait yogurt. I found a mother load of them to send in to fight breast cancer.
Love Anne Carson, too.
