the autumn of our discontent

So the Yankees did a historic nosedive this year. I admit that the Fox announcers' unrelenting reminders that "no one has ever come back from 0-3 to win yada yada" always made me incredibly nervous...nothing tempts fate like an obvious mantra. (Dear Joe Buck and Tim McCarver: Fuck You Both, you Portentious Know-Nothing Asshats. And one other thing...is it just me, or does Al Leiter look certifiable? Like the Dennis Hopper of baseball: "THIS is the pitch Mussina is throwing! THE CIRCLE CHANGE! YOU HOLD IT LIKE THIS! IN A CIRCLE! SEEE?????")
I'm sad, but also relieved that it's over. The tension was too much, and I don't like the ugly aspect that it brings out--in fans on both sides (the incident in Game 6 with all the throwing shit on the field made me embarrassed to be a Yankee fan). This morning Teh Wife tried to be sympathetic:
Teh Wife [very tiny hopeful voice]: Soooo...this means the Yankees aren't playing any more games this year?
Me: Yeah, we're done.
TW: [tries very hard to look sympathetic]
Me: Oh, stop it.
Gotta love her for trying, though. :)
Also this morning, on the way in to work, I noticed that no one was wearing a Yankee cap (as opposed to yesterday) or sweatshirt, jacket, or whatnot. O fickle fans! I've been a Yankees fan since I was 10. I loved them even in the 80s when they were completely Teh Suck. So I'm still going to wear my cap. (Okay, I didn't wear it this morning b/c I didn't want to mess up my hair...like H, I am a slave to my hair.) But in the meantime:
Let's go [insert NL team here]!

Date: 2004-10-21 07:06 am (UTC)Heh. Although you and I have different feelings regarding the outcome of the ALCS, I wholeheartedly agree with you on this point. Buck and McCarver suck ass. I don't care that both of them have strong ties to St. Louis; they annoyed the hell out of me during the entire playoffs. Even my dad, who loved McCarver when he played for the Cardinals, was pissed by his commentating idiocy.

Date: 2004-10-21 08:14 am (UTC)So what was going through my head when I watched this happening?
"Jesus, that's totally fucked up. Why can't the fans keep their shit together and then, after the frelling game, go into the parking lot and overturn a cop car or set something on fire like other fans do." Of course, I spent my early youth in Detroit.... :D
Sorry about your Yankees, theholyfan. :(

I... am... a... straight-male-identified lesbian. [/Lisa doppleganger]
There, I've said it. Feels pretty good. I wonder if the LGBT community center has a support group for that. I wonder if Seattle has a LGBT community center.
I loves my man
Date: 2004-10-22 11:35 am (UTC)So are you going to take a guy name? Like...Brad? We can call you aqua_brad!
And he loves you back-or would-if he had a penis because he doesn't want to love you like a lesbian
Date: 2004-10-22 12:19 pm (UTC)sassy!manly!).I just hope that all my lesbian friends can accept me and respect my choice to finally be
my brothermyself.*wrings hands**clenches fist in a manly manner and... pounds it against the sofa* Ouchie!no subject

Thankfully, Mrs CB shares my enthusiasm for sports entertainment. Cursedly, she tends to yell at the TV which not only annoys me, but scares the cats resulting in five cases of sever "fluffy tail". Women's College Hops start soon...here we go again!
I've been a Yankees fan since I was 10. I was raised in the era of The Big Red Machine and I LOVED Johnny Bench. Even tried to play catcher till I caught a ball with my teeth.
(Okay, I didn't wear it this morning b/c I didn't want to mess up my hair...like H, I am a slave to my hair.) Same here. If not...well, my icon is a self-portrait. And UNLIKE H, I won't pass up a roll in the hay to keep my hair looking nice.

Date: 2004-10-21 02:04 pm (UTC)I tend to slam things. I only yell when I'm alone, otherwise I get "Boy, you are really whack and I wish you'd shut the fuck up" looks from both woman and cat.
And UNLIKE H, I won't pass up a roll in the hay to keep my hair looking nice.
Ditto. She is a true fashionista. :) I hope she hasn't been too traumatized by the game....

OK, so I appreciate the excitement of sports rivalry, particularly this rivalry, but... (it does make me a little frightened for the future of humankind)

Date: 2004-10-21 02:09 pm (UTC)LOL. Without a doubt. Worse than the 2001 World Series, worse than the WS sweep in 1976...
The intensity of the rivalry is kinda scary, and it's been at fever pitch the past couple of years. Now I fear it's only going to get worse!
