Voting this morning was not nearly as traumatic as I thought it would be; the local news was reporting lines and crowds at polling sites all over the city. So we schlepped over to our polling place, P.S. Whatevah, and was relieved to see no lines out the doors.

Inside, though, it was a different scene. Packed. I had never seen so many people there at one time, and was glad that the missus had insisted we get coffee first, because otherwise I would have been "freakin' and tweakin.'" Resigned to our fates, we got in the line to find out which district's machine we needed to wait for. That only took about 5-10 minutes. So we went over to wait in the line for our voting district and there were...

...three people ahead of us. So either our district is really lame, or voted really early, or will vote much later. Other districts had a good 30+ or so people in line, with some lines going out the doors into the hallways. By the time we were done voting and were on our way out, the overall line was beginning to stretch outside the building. We were lucky. But to punish me for my good fortune, fate chose to bestow upon me THE WORST BAGEL EVER. I'm happy to take one for the team, though, just like Hills!:

I know that a lot of you won't be so lucky, though, and will endure long waits--although I certainly hope that's not the case. But to those of you who have yet to vote, chins up, sweeties: We're making history. Let's do it.

yes, my precint was packed as well. no line out the door, but I've been voiting in the same spot for 8 years and I have never seen that many people at that little church.

its exciting, people care :)

ya know - it was just earlier this week that I found out that some polling places where churches... and houses and garages

I never realized those kinds of places could be (would be) used for voting...

yes, I guess it surprised me too when I moved here. I was accustomed to schools, libraries, municipal garages. In the township where I grew up, voting was in this gargantuan garage. There were three industrial green colored voting machines (with the curtain) sitting in front of huge bulldozers and snow plows. There were electric space-heaters around the makeshift registration area. When I lived in Ohio, it was always a public school or library. When I got here to the burgh and learned I would be voting in a church, I was like "a church" what? But that's pittsburgh, just about everything is eventually connected to some kind of church :)

I just found it the weirdest thing - that you could be going to someone's house to cast a ballot...

When I was a kid my parents voted at my grammar school - it closed down on election days - they brought the old lever machines into the 'all purpose room' - the indoor gym, the cafe (the table folded up into the walls)

Since I moved to Pittsburgh, voting for me is always inextricably linked with the smell of onions from the volunteers' hoagies that fills up the basement of the church.

Mmmm, hoagies...::drool::

Pittsburgh has clearly taken you over, since you call them "hoagies." :)

Most of the folks around here consider these their 'vacation homes' so it wasn't bad at all. They all had to vote in their home precincts.

I hope that's just a bad shot of Hillary and NOT a pic of your bagel.

So no Brangelina at the polls, then? :)

Actually, the bagel was about as flat as that Hillary graffito! Bastards. :/

THE WORST BAGEL EVER

is that even legal in NYC?

can you bring suit for mental anguish?

If there is a "bad bagel" award somewhere, I'm gonna fucking nominate them. It IS a crime in this city, I tell you!

where the hell did you go to get a bad bagel? that's a hanging offense in these here parts.
I voted in the Bronx and once the people who thought they were on line for government cheese were weeded out and I got a poll worker that understood how to read the district list, I was out of there in a flash.

people who thought they were on line for government cheese

Do they still do that? Not that I need government cheese, particularly after this morning's bagel fiasco. The bagel was like a ciabatta bread with a hole in it. Maybe Italians can't make bagels (I suspect the joint is owned by people in the 'hood.)

ciabatta has its place - but not as a pseudo-bagel

Exactly! I love ciabatta, but...bagelbatta? NO.

And no, I'm not drinking yet. I swear! You should check in on CB-- given the big Grey's Anatomy shock, she's probably comatose by now!

quick! get a patent! you'll make a fortune! we could buy an island!

yes, I have been reading about the suck-a-tude that ABC has pulled - sounds strange to me - didn't watch the show but the whole think just sounds fishy

and I cracked a bottle of wine at 5pm - you and the misses should join me...

I voted two weeks ago after standing in line for 4 hours here in Miami. Usually this area is heavy Repooblicans because of all the Cuban-Americans but surprisingly and to my delight there was a shit load of Obama supporters.

We might go blue this time around. Oy I have such agita. I will be needing some serious talking down if things go badly.

I'm off to mix my mojitos for later tonight. I may start drinking earlier than I was hoping.

damn... I thought I was the only one to use 'agita' - used it at work the other day and had to explain its meaning - was more difficult that I ever figured since it is so ingrained in me trying to capture all the significance was tough

10 minute wait in my area of the universe -- 8 vote stations set up in the cafeteria area of my old elementary school. everything went smoothly. chatting w/ the poll workers and they said turn-out in my poor-ish/lower middle class neighborhood was, "very good. lots of people turning out" according to the old duffer who was checking my id.

Date: 2008-11-05 06:33 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] theholyinnocent.livejournal.com
Glad you didn't have to wait long. And otherwise I'd be very happy with your neck of the woods except for the Prop 8 thing....

Date: 2008-11-05 06:51 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] angharad_gov.livejournal.com
yeah. that prop 8 thing. there were lots of "yes on prop 8" signs all over my neighborhood -- mostly poor immigrant roman catholics so it was expected that there would be a bunch of "yes" people. not all los angeles people live in the rich west side.

i didn't expect prop 8 to lose. it would have been nice, but i'm more realistic about how people actually feel about gay folks 'round here.

Oddly, it took me longer to walk to where I needed to vote (two blocks) than it did waiting to vote. Whole process was about 10 minutes. Have to say, Obama's ppl have been all over VA -- I had five separate volunteers come to my door in the last week to ask if I was voting. They've been outside the Metro for the last two months registering ppl. And today, on the busy intersection in front of my Bette Porter Building in Arlington, they stood out with signs all day (and it rained) and people were honking left/right. It was slightly unnerving - seeing spontaneous hope & joy.

I'm off to watch the returns and crack open this bottle of champagne I bought this morning after voting. Hopefully it will be celebratory!

Well, I sat down with Linds and Sam last night over some mojitos & said, "Linds, you made a promise to America. You vote Obama or I release the sex tape of you & Bristol Palin to the media."

"You wouldn't dare," she breathed. While Sam laughed her ass off.

"Oh, wouldn't I? Rachel Maddow is watching it right now and you know girlfriend is itching to drive her show ratings even higher...."

Hangover from hell only propelled further by the full 3 hours of sleep I got before staggering to work and yet - totally worth it.

Remind me to tell you at some point about the Proud Pederasts for Palin mini-campaign we waged last night at the election party. We had some serious late-night converts. And yet, alas, the chicken with the big ears took the coop...

In other words, just another Wednesday, darling?

There was the election party, and then there was the erection party. (http://sarahpalinerotica.com/)

I LOVES MY CHICKEN!

And I'm not making sense anymore.

Chicken!

My coworker and I ended up on Flemish TV today, courtesy of a rather cracked out, drunken rant that we forgot we did in front of the cameras last night. Mind you, they cut out our 'support pederasts for Palin!' plea, but yet my dear friend Georgia managed to impart a few words of wisdom:

http://www.deredactie.be/cm/de.redactie.english/mediatheek_en/1.410986

Alleluia! Praise Jesus! The Chicken has won!

Did you and your friend manage to take out the idiot McCain people at the party?

Date: 2008-11-06 01:59 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sugarmomma.livejournal.com
No, darling - we pretended to BE the McCain people at the party. I came up to one nice blonde lady and suggested that we should organize a support group for the vanquished. She trilled at the idea, and once her (Democrat) friend tipped her in on the joke, she called me 'very rude!'.

With another guy I lamented the fact that, with McCain gone, the hit on Iran won't be happening anytime soon... And then we stole a bottle of wine from the bar, and took raunchy photos of each other on the stage.

*sigh* What an election night!
